founded by walter Gropius in 1919 in Weimar, Germany

architecture dept opened in 1927

1929 photography dept opened

closed in 1933 for good due to the Nazi's acclaiming them to be communists

political pressure and constant scrutiny by Nazi's cast a shadow over the school

lasted for 14 years

Joseph Albers
painter, sculptor, architect and teacher
began teaching glass workshop at Bauhaus in 1923
moved to Dessau in 1925 with Bauhaus and then to Berlin

Oskar Schlemmer
1921 became master at Bauhaus in Weimar
directed wall painting dept & stone sculpture workshop & life drawing
head of stage workshop from 1923 - 1929 (Weimar & Dessau)
left Bauhaus july 1929

from 1919 he was head of the work council for art
aimed to make art a social concern during post war upheaval

german born architect and educator
made Bauhaus go back to basics

studied law and economics at uni
travelled Europe 1906-08
left Bauhaus when it closed
