Max Ernst / Dada / Surrealism

Max Ernst
- German painter, sculptor and printmaker
- One of the leading Surrealists
- Self taught but influenced by Van Gogh and Macke
- Artillery officer in WW1
- Interest in dream-like imagery stimulated by Chirico
- Founded Cologne Dada group 1919-21
- Made collages and later paintings with irrational combinations of imagery
- Began participating in Surrealism around 1922
- Discovered technique of 'frottage' (rubbing) in 1925 which provided him with a way to create hallucinatory visions
- Created his first sculpture in 1934
