BTEC LEVEL 3 EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN ART & DESIGN
Student Name: Kimberley Moore
Subject Specialism: Tailoring
Working Title: Intrinsic Outsider
SECTION ONE: Your Final Major Project
The
title reflects the biological and emotional theme of this project. I aim to
have produced at least one sketchbook containing technique samples,
experimental work, illustrated designs and layout plans for my exhibition. I
would also like to have an A3 sketchbook showing the development of my final
piece, along with designs for a collection of full outfits based on the same
theme. My final piece will be a small scale tailored garment displaying many
textile techniques. The sewing and construction of the garment will be visible
and decorated in a way to symbolise a person opening themselves up to another
person, with negative repercussions. Having to combine so many techniques and
make an inside out garment look beautiful will certainly be a challenge; I will
have to push myself to make things work and research extensively.
SECTION TWO: Influences, Research, Sources and Ideas
I
will take influence from McQueen, Westwood and Yinka Shobinaire, along with
other well acclaimed tailors. I can analyse many collections to ensure my
designs are all relevant and have the characteristics of a professional body of
work. I’m looking towards the 18th century as an era to take
influence from because this was a time of precise tailoring. I intend to
research into the biology of intrinsic membranes, decay, feelings &
emotions, loss, recovery and exposure, along with colour, style, pattern,
decorative techniques and catwalk collections. To collect research I will most
likely visit museums such as the V&A to experience the fashion collections,
read books and use online search engines. I will also design a survey to
compile information regarding feelings and emotions, for example how people
would deal with loss and loneliness.
SECTION THREE: Techniques, Processes and Timescale
I
intend to thoroughly experiment with textiles techniques and fabrics both by
hand and using a sewing machine. I will create samples of traditional and
modern techniques, from embroidery to heat manipulation to influence my designs.
I would also like to develop my skills in felting, knitting, print and applique,
to name just a few. I will mainly work in the textiles studio at college, where
I have access to a range of fabrics and equipment that I can use to develop my
ideas into workable samples to use on my final piece. I will also use my
graphics tablet to design on PhotoShop as this is something I haven’t tried
before. I am going to use the first 4 weeks for experimental and design work,
week 5 to finalise my design work and from week 6 onwards I will start the production
of my final piece. Week 8 will consist of final evaluations and planning my
exhibition layout.
SECTION FOUR: Method of Evaluation
I will evaluate my work using market research, group crits and audio recordings throughout the process. I will identify weaknesses through my evaluations which will help me steer my project in the right direction. I will determine the success of my FMP using a notebook for viewers to write their thoughts in and I will also assess whether I worked to the best of my ability or not.
